Dressed in a low-cut gown, the then 18-year-old Michelle Robinson was escorted to her prom at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in Chicago by Mr Upchurch.
It came seven years before she met her future husband Barack at the Sidley Austin law firm, also in Chicago, where they both worked.
Mr Upchurch, 47, now a divorced father-of-three who lives in Colorado Springs and works as a customer service representative, said he had “pretty much forgotten” the night of the prom, and couldn’t even recall whether the evening had ended with a kiss.
“I grew up with Michelle and her brother Craig,” he told The National Enquirer.
“We were neighbours and our families were close.
“When Michelle was in the middle of her junior year, we began dating and continued to date for a year and a half.”
He said that the romance between the two “went nowhere”.
